Having surgery can be a very scary time of a person’s life, whether it is simply a hernia or fighting off cancer, patients can feel a loss of control or hopelessness. When patients come to me, my desire is for them to learn what are the state of the art options, which ones are the best for them, and to include the patient in the decision making process, allowing them to express their concerns and fears, to ask question when they don’t understand, and when they leave my office they will a clearer impression of their disease and hope that a solution will be found! I see my role as a team captain and my patients are on my team. I help direct them to the right treatment plan in a logical and stepwise fashion. In order to do this, I avoid intimidating medical terms which can add to their apprehension and confusion. I like to use word pictures and everyday language to explain how this amazing human body works and how parts are affected when things don’t function as they should.
