RN Johnson completes OHSA internship
April 13, 2006

Shelly Johnson, RN, BSN,
COHN-S

Shelly Johnson RN, BSN, COHN-S, Kishwaukee Corporate Health Manager, recently completed a five-week internship with the local Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office in North Aurora. The internship was a requirement for Johnson’s Masters Degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Occupational Health, which she is currently completing with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During her internship, Johnson accompanied OSHA compliance officers to many different types of businesses to evaluate their compliance with OSHA standards. She observed inspections and attended informal conferences.

“What I found most interesting about the experience was learning about the four parts of an OSHA citation and how OSHA assesses an employer for compliance,” said Johnson.

She worked with the Assistant Area Director of OSHA to develop a brochure for workplace safety among the Hispanic population. Johnson also researched service organizations that may be of assistance to reaching this population as OSHA strives to decrease the workplace fatality rate of the Hispanic population.

The knowledge Johnson gained will help her better serve area employers who partner with Kishwaukee Corporate Health to improve the health and safety of their workforce, reduce injuries and facilitate early return to work.
