Peggy Jones, RN, Becomes Certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner
July 18, 2007
Peggy Jones, RN, Kishwaukee Community Hospital Emergency Department, recently became a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).
As a SANE nurse, Jones responds to the Emergency Department with notification of a sexual assault to obtain a preliminary history, conduct an in-depth interview and conduct the physical, including a pelvic exam to collect appropriate evidence. She will maintain a verified chain of evidence and collaborate with law enforcement officials, which may include testifying in court. Her role includes victim education regarding sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy risks and provides referrals for follow-up care.
To obtain Certification as a SANE nurse, Jones attended a 40-hour SANE training program provided by the State of Illinois. The program requires excellent communication skills, extensive knowledge and reliable evidence collection and a demonstrated competence in conducting pelvic exams. In addition to the 40-hour class, a SANE nurse must complete extensive clinical hours with time spent with the State’s Attorney Office, sexual assault investigative officers, and time observing courtroom proceedings.
In conjunction with the State of Illinois,
KishHealth System is sponsoring a SANE nurse training opportunity in DeKalb in February of 2008. Anyone interested in this training should contact the State of Illinois Attorney General’s office.
