Dr. John Kostrey to retire
November 23, 2010
Beloved DeKalb pediatrician, Dr. John Kostrey, is retiring after 51 years in medicine. The public is invited to celebrate Dr. Kostrey’s long medical career with both DeKalb Clinic and the medical staff at Kishwaukee Community Hospital at a retirement open house on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m., in Kish Hospital’s Roberts Conference Center.
Dr. Kostrey graduated from Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1959, and practiced medicine there for ten years before immigrating to the U.S. He began in 1968 as a pediatrician at DeKalb Clinic, board certified in 1971. Over time, Dr. Kostrey has held various positions at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, including Chief of Staff and Chair of the Pediatric Department. He has always said, “I love what I do and every moment is exciting.”
A dedicated doctor, fluent in Russian, he has been committed to this humanitarian work because of what he experienced growing up in Czechoslovakia during World War II. He remembers the hardships and suffering of that time and has felt blessed that he could share his knowledge and experience to improve the lives of children. His rewards have been the hugs and smiles from the children he has helped.
Dr. Kostrey was honored in 2007 by Kish Hospital as one of three doctors to have worked at all three hospitals, DeKalb Public (1969-1975), Kishwaukee Community Hospital (1975-2007), the new Kish Hospital (2007-2010).
Dr. Kostrey was a 2009 Acclaimed Physician, recipient of the Humanitarian/Community Service Award. He spent at least eight of his “vacations” doing mission work in Panama, Mexico, the Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. On the mission trips, Dr. Kostrey provided medical care to children in hospitals, orphanages, schools, churches, and homes. Some days, 100-120 children received medical attention from him. In addition to medical care, these trips also involved discussions and treatment advice to the locals and distributing donations of medical supplies, medications and reading glasses.
Dr. Kostrey and his wife Millie raised their four children in DeKalb, and now have six grandsons they are looking forward to spending more time with.
