Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center at Kish Hospital Receives Program Accreditation
February 29, 2012
Kishwaukee Community Hospital's Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center has received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), making it the only accredited sleep lab program in the area.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), this accreditation is "the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate sleep medicine services." The standards for accreditation tells consumers that sleep medicine providers display and maintain proficiency in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.
"In addition to sleep studies, the center ensures patient compliance with home treatment by providing a sleep disorders support group referred to as A.W.A.K.E (Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic)," said Joey Schap, director of Respiratory Care, Sleep, EEG, Pulmonary Function Testing and Cardiopulmonary Rehab at Kish Hospital. "This support group is offered once per quarter and is open to the public free of charge," Schap added. "Many people affected by a sleep disorder use this group to meet with others affected by the same disorder and find it useful for ideas about home treatment."
To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional healthcare as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and labs, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country.
