Food Play
Food Play is an award-winning live theatre production that promotes healthy eating habits to school children across the nation. Food Play was created in 1982 with guidance from the USDA, CDC, and other public health agencies. Its message is based on current nutrition related curriculum and research-based evidence. Children hardly know they’re learning while witnessing this lively stage show that incorporates juggling, magic, music, and audience participation; however, the message is clear. Research conducted by the USDA and the CDC shows students’ knowledge of health and nutrition greatly improves after watching a Food Play production.

Food Play was presented at Tyler Elementary School in DeKalb in Spring 2011. Kish Hospital’s Community Wellness team hopes to sponsor Food Play presentations at DeKalb and Sycamore schools in the future.

We Can!
Developed by the National Institutes of Health, We Can! is a program specifically designed for parents of 8-13 year old children to address the issue of childhood obesity. In this fun, interactive program, parents learn ways to integrate healthy food choices, physical activity and reduce screen time into your family.

CATCH
Getting kids to change their habits isn’t easy, even when it comes to their health. That’s why the CDC developed CATCH. Coordinated Approach to Child Health, or CATCH, is a systematic approach to teaching kids how to make healthy changes in their lives, and how to make those changes last. CATCH is designed to get kids moving with fun activities and to encourage them to make better food choices. Kids can have some fun while developing healthy habits that last a lifetime.

The CATCH program was successfully piloted at Tyler Elementary School in DeKalb in Spring 2011. Include number of classes we were in and how many children we reached. Kish Hospital’s Community Wellness team hopes to bring CATCH to all DeKalb County schools in the near future.
